A laser tape measure can be a time saver for homeowners. Here are three things people should know when it comes to using a laser tape measure the first time

Using a laser tape measure is slightly different than using a traditional retractable tape measure. Some people find this type of tool much easier for measuring items in the home while others suffer from not being able to get accurate measurements with the item. For anyone who is considering buying a laser tape measure or just needs some tips on how to properly use one, here is three things that people need to know.

Keep the Laser Tape Measure Properly Aligned

If the alignment of the laser tape measure goes out of whack it will not give accurate measurements, which can definitely cause some problems. Every one of these tools will come with an instruction manual that will tell the owner how to align the tape measure and check for proper alignment. Most of the time aligning the tool only takes only a few minutes and is not difficult to do.

Most of the problems that people have with laser tape measures is that they don't give accurate numbers because people have not aligned them properly. Unlike with traditional tape measures, you don't physically control the alignment of the measuring as it is done completely with the laser. This does take adjusting to but reading the instruction booklet is the best way to make sure the tool is working properly.

Clean the Laser and Store It Properly

The main component of a laser tape measure is the laser. This means the owner needs to be careful to take good care of the laser lens. The tool should be kept in its proper case away from other tools that may scratch the lens. If the lens gets scratched or damaged, the tap measure will not work properly as the laser will be off in measurements from the scratch or other damage.

The laser should also be cleaned on a regular basis. If dirt or dust gets on the lens it can make the measurement inaccurate. Also, dirt and other particles can scratch the area as well. The owner can use a lens cleaner along with a soft cloth to clean the area. Never use a cleaner that is not approved for this type of tool.

Double Check the Measurements

When using a new laser tape measure one may want to double check the measurements before they do any type of cutting. Use a traditional measure to measure the distance and compare the numbers. If the numbers are completely off then something may be wrong the laser or it is not being properly used. It's a wise decision to double-check the measurements until a person feels comfortable and confident with the laser tape measure.

Also, just like with any measuring, a person always needs to measure twice and cut once. This also helps determine if the tape measure is being used properly as well. If the first number a person gets is off by several inches or even feet from the second number, then they know something may be wrong with the instrument. Always refer to the instruction manual for troubleshooting.

A laser tape measure can be a great addition to a toolbox if it is used properly. The best way to ensure proper use is to read the instruction manual and take proper care of the tool, such as cleaning the laser and storing it in the case. It may take some time to get used to measuring with this instrument, but it can make some home improvement jobs much easier.
